Crafters are kind, creative souls - but that doesn’t mean we won’t come unglued (pun absolutely intended) if you say the wrong thing. Behind every handmade item is time, effort, and usually a few glue burns and a light dusting of glitter in places it shouldn’t be.
So if you want to stay on our good side, maybe avoid these phrases that are guaranteed to ruffle a few (glittery felt) feathers.
1. “You must save so much money making things yourself!”

Well . . . here's the thing. Do you have any idea how expensive craft supplies are? That $12 candle probably cost us $47 in materials - and we loved every minute of it. It's still cheaper than therapy.
2. “You’re so crafty! Can you just whip something up for me real quick?”

Sure! Let me clear my schedule, drop everything, and use my personal stash on your last-minute whim. No big deal.
The problem is that you've been crafty before crafting was cool, and everyone knows it!
3. “You know you can just buy that, right?”

Yes, Karen. We know. But where’s the fun in that? Let us live. Let us buy Mod Podge. We're not hurting anyone!
4. “This looks homemade."

If you mean it looks like it was made with love, skill, and creative flair - thanks! If you mean it looks janky . . . you might want to start running. Also . . you look handmade.
5. “How long did that take you?"

This question is typically asked in an incredulous tone with wide eyes. The answer is: longer than you think and more than I care to admit. Some things can’t be measured in hours - only in passion and a pack of half empty glue sticks.
The fact is, all crafters are working on their phDs (projects half done). So really, who is counting?
6. “Why do you need so many supplies?”

Because I need options. And backups. And backups for my backups. It’s called being prepared.
7. “Can I bring my kids over to craft with you?”

Hard pass. Unless your child knows how to operate a Cricut and clean glitter off the ceiling, this is a solo mission.
8. “Isn’t this just a hobby?”

Call it a hobby again and watch how fast I turn all of these rolls of washi tape into projectiles.
9. “That’s a lot of effort for something small.”

Funny, that’s exactly what I was thinking about your opinion. Crafters are always gonna craft, no matter the effort. It's what we do!
10. “I could probably make that myself.”

Then by all means, give it a try. I’ll be over here sipping tea from my hand painted mug, watching this DIY disaster unfold (and knowing, I can totally make that too).

Crafters are passionate, talented, and maybe a little protective of their work - and for good reason. We pour our hearts (and a decent chunk of our paycheck) into everything we create.
So if you know and love a crafter, support them, compliment their work, and for the love of yarn, don’t say any of the things on this list. You just might leave with a pom-pom stuck to your forehead.
