The Ultimate Crafter Starter Pack: What Every Newbie Needs (and What They’ll Regret Buying)

The Ultimate Crafter Starter Pack: What Every Newbie Needs (and What They’ll Regret Buying)

Starting out as a crafter is exciting . . . but it can also be overwhelming. There are so many tools, supplies, and Pinterest boards screaming for your attention.

But here’s the thing: you really don’t need everything to get rolling. And some things you buy now will end up collecting dust faster than you can say “glue stick.”

This guide breaks down what every beginner really needs . . . and what you can skip (trust us as lifelong crafters . . . we've learned the hard way!).

Regardless of the craft discipline(s) that you choose to dive into, this advice stands. These goodies apply to a wide variety of crafts and home DIYs. So check out the list below and let us know what you think in the comments!

✅ What You Really Need:

A Good Pair of Scissors

Not the cheap kind. Real, sharp, fabric-cutting, never-for-paper scissors. We love Fiskars brand for their longevity and quality.

A Hot Glue Gun (and Plenty of Sticks)

The MVP of crafting! Just don’t touch the tip, heh heh. Every crafter needs one, plus a pack of spare sticks.

Basic Storage Bins or a Cart

Because your dining table won’t cut it forever. You're also going to need a place to store supplies.

Movable carts like this one at Michaels are popular for storing supplies. I have three of these in my craft room!

Cutting Mat & Ruler

Protect your surfaces and get those straight lines like a pro. You're going to want the cutting knife too, of course (which a lot of times comes with the mat).

Quality Adhesives

We already talked about a hot glue gun. You'll also need Mod Podge, craft glue, double-sided tape, E-6000 - don’t skimp here.

Supplies for One Project at a Time

Pick your poison and get the basics. Meaning, decide on one project and get what you need just to make that project. It's tempting to see all the pretty textures and colors at the craft store and go buck wild.

I promise you'll be happier if you just buy for one at a time, at least at the beginning. It also gives you more flexibility to switch to another craft without feeling guilty.

Lots of Patience

Not sold in stores, but critical to have on hand. You'll definitely need it, especially at first.

❌ What You’ll Probably Regret Buying:

That Overpriced, Trendy Machine You’ll Use Once

Looking at you, latest die-cut machine! Note: I'm not saying NEVER buy one. You just don't want to buy one at first, and you definitely want to try someone else's before you commit.

Having said that, Facebook Marketplace is a great place to find machines that people have used only a few times . . .

Every Color of Yarn/Paint Before You Even Start

Trust us - you don’t need 74 shades of blue craft paint or yarn (yet). You'll end up with an overwhelming stash if you go crazy right away. Just be patient (it's hard), and acquire supplies over time.

Complicated Kits “For Beginners” That Aren’t Actually Beginner-Friendly

Read reviews before you end up crying into your embroidery floss. Make sure that other beginners have had success, too!

Extra credit: ask questions in topical Facebook groups about the craft/kit before you purchase.

Novelty Tools You Can’t Even Figure Out How to Use

Don't buy the $400 bookbinding machine and printer just because you saw an Instagram ad! When you're starting out, begin with basic crafts that have basic/limited tools like crochet, knitting, decoupage, and card making.

Bulk Supplies for a Craft You’re Not Sure You’ll Like

Maybe try making one scarf before buying knitting needles in every size and 500 skeins of yarn. You want to make sure you love the craft you're going to spending hours doing!

Also remember that *every* craft - especially knitting - has a learning curve. so give it a chance. Don't give up; we promise it gets easier.

----------

The truth is, every crafter’s stash is a mix of treasures and “what was I thinking?” purchases. That’s part of the journey!

Start with the essentials, embrace the mistakes, and remember - it’s not hoarding if it’s craft supplies.
